Most new houses, outbuildings, carports and warehouses in South Africa are covered with roof sheeting, usually steel profiles cut to the exact length of each roof slope. BuildingContractors.co.za doesn't sell or install roofing. Tell us the profile, coating, sheet lengths and where you are, and we pass your request to independent roofing suppliers or roofing contractors in your area. They quote you directly for supply only or supply and fixing. The request is free and there is no obligation to accept any quote.

Roof sheeting profiles

  • IBR sheeting: the trapezoidal profile used on most houses, carports and sheds, strong enough for low pitches
  • Corrugated sheeting: the classic wavy profile, popular on farm buildings, verandas and older homes
  • Concealed-fix profiles: clip-fixed sheets with no screws through the top, used on low-pitch and architectural roofs
  • Fibre cement roof sheet: non-metal sheets for some outbuildings, carports and corrosive spots
  • Clear polycarbonate sheets: matching profiles that let daylight into patios and workshops

Each profile has its own minimum pitch and purlin spacing, so match the sheet to the roof design rather than the other way round.

Thickness, coatings and colours

Steel sheeting is sold by thickness, commonly 0.47 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.58 mm and 0.8 mm. Thicker sheet spans further, dents less in hail and is easier to walk on during maintenance. Coatings include plain galvanised, aluminium-zinc coated and pre-painted sheet in a range of colours. On the coast, salt air attacks thin coatings quickly, so ask for a heavier coating class or aluminium sheet within a few kilometres of the sea. Highveld hail is the other big test: thin sheet on wide purlin spacing dents easily.

Roof sheeting as part of the whole roof

The sheets are only one part of the order. A complete roofing quote covers ridge cappings, barge and side flashings, valley gutters, screws with sealing washers, insulation and often gutters and downpipes. SANS 10400 requires roof insulation on new homes for energy efficiency, and the roof structure must be designed for the sheet weight and local wind. New roofs on houses are normally signed off by a competent person such as an engineer or truss designer, and roofing work forms part of the approved building plans.

Supply only or supply and fix

Builders and roofers often buy sheeting supply only, cut to a cutting list. Homeowners usually do better with a roofing contractor who measures the roof, orders the right lengths and fixes everything, which puts one party in charge of leaks. Sheets cut to length avoid laps and waste, but long sheets need the right truck and careful offloading. Compare quotes on the same profile, thickness, coating and fittings, and check whether delivery and VAT are included.

Comparing roof sheeting prices

Material prices change with demand, transport costs and quantity. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: type, size, grade or strength, and the SANS mark where one applies.
  • Quantity: per unit, per pallet, per m³ or per load, and whether there is a minimum order.
  • Delivery: the delivery charge, offloading, and access for a large truck or crane truck.
  • VAT and validity: whether the price includes VAT and how long it is held.

What to include in your request

  • Profile, thickness, coating and colour, if you know them
  • Cutting list with sheet lengths, or the roof plan and pitch
  • Distance from the sea, for the right coating
  • Flashings, insulation, gutters and fixing needed or not
  • Delivery address, site access and when you need the sheets

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell roof sheeting?
No. BuildingContractors.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent roofing suppliers or roofing contractors near you, who quote you directly for supply or supply and fixing. There is no charge for the request and no obligation to accept a quote.
What is the difference between IBR and corrugated sheeting?
IBR has deep, flat-topped ribs that make it stiffer, so it suits lower pitches and wider purlin spacing. Corrugated has a rounded wave, needs a steeper pitch and is often chosen for its traditional look on farmhouses, verandas and older homes. Both come in similar thicknesses and coatings.
Which roof sheeting thickness should I choose?
For houses, 0.5 mm or 0.58 mm steel is a common choice, with thicker sheet for wide purlin spacing, hail-prone areas or roofs that will be walked on. Thin sheet is cheaper but dents and flexes more. Your roof designer or roofing contractor should confirm the thickness for your spans.
Can I get roof sheets cut to length?
Yes. Most roofing suppliers roll or cut sheets to the length of each roof slope, so you avoid end laps. Send a cutting list or the roof plan with your quote request. Very long sheets need a suitable truck and enough hands, or a lifting arrangement, to offload safely.
