Good paving starts below the surface, so choosing experienced paving contractors matters as much as choosing the pavers. A well-built driveway, patio or walkway stays level, drains properly and lasts for years. BuildingContractors.co.za helps you find paving contractors near me without phoning around. We don't lay paving or sell pavers. Tell us what you want paved, the rough size and where you are, and we pass your request to independent paving contractors in your area, who quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation.

What paving contractors do

Most paving jobs follow the same steps, and a full quote should cover each one:

  • Excavating and removing old paving, grass or soil
  • Building and compacting a layered base, often with a stabilised layer for driveways
  • Setting edge restraints such as kerbs or concrete haunching
  • Screeding a bedding sand layer and laying the pavers to pattern
  • Compacting, filling joints with sand and cleaning up

Skipping the base or edge restraints is the main reason paving sinks, spreads or ruts within a few years.

Choosing pavers

Interlocking concrete pavers are the most common choice for driveways, laid in herringbone for strength under turning cars. They come in many shapes and colours, and individual pavers can be lifted and relaid if a pipe needs repair. Thicker pavers suit heavier traffic, with thinner ones fine for patios and paths. Clay pavers keep their colour well and suit traditional face brick homes. Concrete paving blocks should comply with SANS 1058. For pool surrounds and entertainment areas, ask about non-slip finishes, and remember that dark pavers get hot in summer sun.

Drainage, levels and approvals

Paving should fall away from the house so water runs to a drain, garden or the street, never onto a neighbour's property. Expansive clay soils, common on the Highveld, need deeper preparation, and areas with heavy summer storms may need channel drains across the driveway. Permeable paving is another option where stormwater is a problem. Paving on your own property seldom needs building plans, but municipalities usually control driveway crossings over the sidewalk, so check before paving the verge. In estates, the design guidelines may set the colour and type of paver.

Comparing paving quotes

Quotes vary mainly because of what is underneath. Ask each contractor to state the area in m², base thickness and material, paver type and thickness, edging and whether rubble removal is included. Ask to see recent jobs that are a few years old. Agree a written contract with a deposit and final payment on completion, and ask what workmanship guarantee applies if pavers sink. Order a few spare pavers from the same batch, as colours vary between batches and you may need them for repairs later.

Comparing quotes for paving contractors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: what is included item by item, and which materials the contractor supplies.
  • Payment: a deposit and payments in stages as work is completed, never most of it upfront.
  • Time: the start date, how long the work will take and what happens if it runs late.
  • Compliance and guarantee: approvals and certificates needed for the job, and the guarantee on workmanship.

What to include in your request

  • Area to be paved in m², or length and width of each section
  • What is there now: grass, soil, old paving or concrete
  • Use: foot traffic, cars, or trucks and heavy vehicles
  • Preferred paver type, colour and pattern, if known
  • Photos, address and access for a tipper truck and compactor

Frequently asked questions

Do you lay paving or sell pavers?
No. BuildingContractors.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent paving contractors near you, who visit if needed and quote you directly. There is no cost for the request and you don't have to accept any quote.
Why does paving sink or move?
Usually because the base was too thin or poorly compacted, the edges were not restrained, or water was allowed to pond and soften the layers underneath. Clay soils make this worse. A good contractor prepares the base for the load and soil and builds in proper falls for drainage.
How long does a paving job take?
A small patio or path can be done in a day or two. An average driveway usually takes three to seven working days, depending on excavation, base work, weather and the paving pattern. Large parking areas take longer. Ask your contractor for a programme with the quote.
Can new paving go over old paving or concrete?
Sometimes, if the old surface is sound, level and drains properly, and there is enough height below doors and the damp-proof course. Often it is better to remove it. Your paving contractor should inspect the existing surface and explain the options before quoting.
