For foundations, slabs and driveways, ready mix concrete arrives batched to a set strength and is poured straight from the truck, saving days of mixing by hand. BuildingContractors.co.za helps you get prices. Tell us the volume, strength and where you are, and we pass your request to independent concrete suppliers and batching plants that deliver in your area. They quote you directly, so you can compare the price for ready mix concrete, delivery and pump hire. We don't supply or pour concrete ourselves. The request is free and there is no obligation.

When ready mix concrete makes sense

Mixing by hand or with a small mixer works for a few wheelbarrows. Once you need more than a cubic metre or two, ready mix is usually faster and gives more consistent strength. It suits house foundations, ground floor slabs, suspended slabs, driveways, garage floors and the base for a boundary wall. The concrete is batched from cement, sand, 19 mm crusher stone and water to the strength you order, and delivered in a mixer truck that keeps it turning on the way to site.

Strength, volume and site access

  • Strength: ordered in MPa, for example around 15 MPa for blinding layers, 20 to 25 MPa for many foundations and slabs, and higher for driveways or structural work. Your engineer or plans should state it.
  • Volume: length x width x depth in metres gives m³. Add about 5% for uneven ground.
  • Access: trucks are heavy and long. If the truck can't reach the pour, you may need a concrete pump.

Foundations and slabs should be checked before the pour, and your builder must have formwork, reinforcing mesh such as ref 193 and labour ready.

Ready mix concrete cost per m3: a rough 2026 guide

As a very rough 2026 guide, the ready mix concrete cost per m3 for common strengths often falls somewhere around R1,900 to R2,800 per m³, before extras. Small loads may carry a surcharge, and a pump, waiting time, distance and weekend pours add to the total. Prices vary between regions and plants. Treat this as a starting point only and ask local suppliers for a full quote.

Finding ready mix concrete near me

Concrete must be placed within a limited time after batching, so the plant needs to be within reasonable distance. Searching for ready mix concrete near me is the right instinct. Ask each supplier for the strength, slump, price per m³, minimum load, pump options and how they handle delays. Book well ahead for large pours, and have a plan if rain is forecast, especially in the Cape winter.

Comparing ready-mix concrete prices

Material prices change with demand, transport costs and quantity. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: type, size, grade or strength, and the SANS mark where one applies.
  • Quantity: per unit, per pallet, per m³ or per load, and whether there is a minimum order.
  • Delivery: the delivery charge, offloading, and access for a large truck or crane truck.
  • VAT and validity: whether the price includes VAT and how long it is held.

What to include in your request

  • Volume in m³, or the length, width and depth of the pour
  • Strength in MPa required by your plans or engineer
  • What it is for: foundation, slab, driveway or other
  • Site address and access for a heavy truck
  • Preferred pour date and whether you need a pump

Frequently asked questions

How much ready mix concrete do I need for a slab?
Multiply length by width by thickness in metres. A 6 m by 4 m slab at 100 mm thick needs 2.4 m³. Add around 5% for uneven ground and spillage. Your builder or engineer should confirm the thickness and strength for the use and soil conditions.
Is there a minimum order for ready mix?
Many suppliers have a minimum load or charge a small-load surcharge below a set volume, because the truck trip costs the same. Ask when you request quotes. For very small jobs, mixing on site with bagged cement and aggregates may be cheaper.
Do I need a concrete pump?
Only if the truck cannot get its chute close to the pour, for example a backyard, a suspended slab or a steep site. Pump hire adds cost but saves labour and time, and gives a better result than barrowing concrete a long way. Suppliers can advise once they know your site access and the size of the pour.
Do you supply ready mix concrete?
No. BuildingContractors.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent ready mix suppliers near you, who quote and deliver directly if you accept. There is no fee and no obligation to go ahead, and your builder remains responsible for placing and curing the concrete.
