Cement goes into almost every stage of a build, from foundations and slabs to mortar, plaster and paving. Prices change during the year, so getting current quotes is the easiest way to save. BuildingContractors.co.za passes your request to independent building merchants and yards serving your area, who quote you directly on the cement price for the bags or pallets you need, delivered. We don't sell or deliver cement ourselves. The request is free and there is no obligation to accept any quote.

Which cement for which job

Most building cement in South Africa is sold in 50 kg bags and graded by class:

  • CEM II 32.5N: general-purpose cement for mortar, plaster, brickwork and light concrete
  • CEM II 42.5N: higher-strength cement for foundations, slabs, columns and structural concrete
  • CEM I 52.5: high-strength cement used mainly by precast and specialist concrete work

Bags should show the class and the SANS mark under SANS 50197. Your engineer or plans may specify a class for structural work, so follow that.

Bag cement price: a rough 2026 guide

As a very rough 2026 guide, the bag cement price for a 50 kg bag of common building cement often falls somewhere around R100 to R150, with 42.5N usually a little more than 32.5N. The 50kg cement price varies by brand, region, quantity and distance from the depot, and can rise during the year. Use this only as a starting point and ask local suppliers for current prices including VAT and delivery.

Buying by the pallet

For a house, extension or slab, buying a full pallet is often better value than single bags. The pallet of cement price is normally lower per bag, and delivery by crane truck saves handling. Ask the supplier how many bags are on their pallet, as this differs. Cement has a limited shelf life once delivered: store it off the ground on pallets, under cover and wrapped in plastic, and use older bags first. Lumpy cement that won't crumble in your hand should not go into structural work.

How much cement do you need?

Quantities depend on the mix. Mortar and plaster use cement with building or plaster sand, while concrete adds 19 mm crusher stone. For foundations and slabs above a few cubic metres, ready-mix concrete is often quicker and more consistent than mixing on site. Ask your builder for a quantity based on your plans, or send the wall areas and slab sizes with your request so suppliers can estimate the bags needed.

Comparing cement prices

Material prices change with demand, transport costs and quantity. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: type, size, grade or strength, and the SANS mark where one applies.
  • Quantity: per unit, per pallet, per m³ or per load, and whether there is a minimum order.
  • Delivery: the delivery charge, offloading, and access for a large truck or crane truck.
  • VAT and validity: whether the price includes VAT and how long it is held.

What to include in your request

  • Cement class needed, e.g. 32.5N or 42.5N, or the job it is for
  • Number of bags or pallets
  • Delivery address and whether a crane truck can offload
  • Whether you also need sand, stone or bricks
  • When you need it, so the cement arrives fresh

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 32.5N and 42.5N cement?
The number shows the minimum strength the cement reaches at 28 days in standard tests, in MPa. 32.5N suits mortar, plaster and general work. 42.5N gives stronger concrete and is often used for foundations, slabs and structural elements. Follow your plans or engineer where a class is specified.
How many bags of cement are on a pallet?
It varies by manufacturer and supplier, so ask when you request a quote. Buying by the full pallet usually lowers the price per bag and makes delivery easier with a crane truck. Make sure you have a dry, level place to store the pallet on site.
How long does a bag of cement last?
Kept dry, off the ground and sealed, cement can last a few months, but strength drops as it absorbs moisture from the air. Coastal humidity and Cape winter rain shorten its life. Order cement in quantities your builder will use within weeks, not months.
Do you sell cement?
No. BuildingContractors.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent building merchants near you, who quote you directly on bag or pallet prices and deliver if you accept. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare several quotes before choosing a supplier.
